It's been a while since I've updated this ol' blog, and as fourth year work piles up, now seems as good a time as any to get back to it ...?!

Last time, I proclaimed that I would really get cracking on my return to the country. So what exactly does this 'cracking' entail, I hear you ask. Well there are a few things I've been up to...

Firstly, that degree I have to finish off.

I popped into London Fashion Week as usual and this time produced a little series of photos that can be found HERE.

Lako Bukia

The photos first went up with the new arts and culture online hot spot, Little Ghost, a project run by editor Sian (one switched on, sassy lady). I'm happy to have since joined the team to offer a little creative direction, and have been working on giving the temporary layout a facelift, and LG an visual identity. The end result is minimal with a few careful details. I'm sure you can expect a lot more to come as the project grows.

Oh and I've also recently joined Redbrick newspaper's design team as Jr Art Director!

So, there's a fair bit to do. So far this first term of our final year, has been stressful and awesome in equal measures. I have a feeling it's going to carry on in much the same way. It's been good to get home and get cracking.

Barton on Winehouse

It's so easy to lose the Winehouse plot, but Laura Barton articulates precisely why I'm sorry we lost Amy Winehouse.

"It was often noted that Amy Winehouse's music harked back to another age — to the heydays of Motown and soul, R&B, jazz, girl groups and Phil Spector's Wall of Sound; it was there in the brass, in the impeccable period production and the sublime smoke and burnish of her voice.

But it was a quality that seeped into her words too, into the lyrics that nodded not to her contemporaries, but to the work of early female blues singers such as Big Mama Thornton and Ma Rainey, Ethel Waters and Bessie Smith. These were songs sometimes written by the blueswomen themselves and occasionally contributed by male songwriters (JC Johnson for example, who wrote Smith's Empty Bed Blues and Waters's You Can't Do What My Last Man Did), but that took a female perspective – tales of hound dogs and backdoor men, coffee grinders, deep sea divers, and of love lost, deserted, thrown out and taken back again.

Pop music had often cast women as sweet, bright creatures, but Winehouse's lyrics revealed something mulchier, messier. Here was a woman who refused to conform – not in the eccentric mad woman in the attic mould of Kate Bush or Björk, but a woman who chose to live a little wild, follow her heart and sing of the simple stew of being female. Her songs were filled with broad talk, cussing, drink and drugs and dicks, songs that could hinge on one magnificent, unladylike question: "What kind of fuckery is this?"

She sang openly of female desire – not the squawky, shrill sexuality of Sex and the City and Ann Summers, but something truer, more physical, more serious. She sang about the ache of the body, the need for emotion, the distracting allure of a man's shoulders, shirt, underwear. "When he comes to me, I drip for him tonight," she sang on I Wake Up Alone. "Drowned in me, we bathe under blue light."

She frequently gave her songs a familiar, almost domestic setting, a world of kitchen floors, chips and pitta, Tanqueray and Stella. "I'm in the tub, you on the seat," she sang on You Know I'm No Good. "Lick your lips as I soak my feet/ Then you notice likkle carpet burn/ My stomach drops and my guts churn." It was a verse that started off like a Degas painting, naked and intimate and warmly erotic, but swiftly dissembled into something sad and messy and ruined.

And this, too, was key to Winehouse's lyrics – she gave you an image and then quickly swiped it away, a honeyed love scene soon dissolved into wretchedness; over the course of an album it gave the impression of a life of instability, lived from one ramshackle lurch to the next.

But there were constants – namely addiction and passion, the flaming five-storey fire of love she always returned to in Love Is a Losing Game, the ferocious, proprietorial female strength of Some Unholy War, the mind fogged by drugs and love and desire. In Back to Black's great tangle of pride and neediness we found a melding of the two: "You love blow and I love puff," she sang. "And life is like a pipe/ And I'm a tiny penny rolling up the walls inside."

The other constant presence was of self-recrimination and remorse. In her lyrics Winehouse seemed to show how she screwed things up – how she should never have played the "game" of love in the first place, of "teasing" her self-esteem, and of "this regret I got accustomed to". In Tears Dry on Their Own she gives herself a stern talking-to: "I cannot play myself again, I should be my own best friend," she warns. "Not fuck myself in the head with stupid men."

She had a special knack in her lyrics, a trick, a twist that made her songs often startlingly truthful; each composition would contain at least a line, an image, a turn of phrase that seems to shuck the song open."

Cabo de Gata: A sleepover by the sea, under the Milky Way.

For our last weekend in Spain me and my friends spent the night on the coast in Almeria. Uploading the photos on Facebook, I opted for the rose tinted title 'A sleepover by the sea, under the Milky Way'. If I were to give you a more precise account of our trip to Cabo de Gata, it would probably sound a little less romantic. It was perhaps the most uncomfortable sleepover ever, that left me with 1 000 000+ bites, and consequently a swollen face and hands. It wasn't my best look, but a quick trip to the emergency department, one injection, and a few anti-histamines later I was A okay.

Allergy aside, I suppose the weekend was as lovely as the album title suggests. We did see the Milky Way amid countless stars (some shooting), and it was beautiful. I wasn't equipped to take a good photo but I have to say that more than the sea or snow, if you never have the chance to see the night sky naturally you will have surely missed out.

And of course, you can't fall asleep beneath such a spectacle without something suitably incredible to listen to:

This Mario remix is courtesy Brooklyn beat maker Rimar (responsible also for the delightful beachy tune above) and deserves a thorough listening to. The best way for me to describe it would be like a warm, fuzzy dream in 3 minutes. You know when you wake up and you don't quite remember what you dreamt, but know that it was something good?

Anyway, two weeks later and I'm still very much having a Rimar moment. Sadly this is no longer my soundtrack for stargazing, but the commute into London. That said, it still takes me elsewhere and despite the bite related complications that followed, I'd much rather be lounging on that beach than sat on the piccadilly line.

Hot Weather

Yep. Hot, HOT weather. It's verging on painful having to study right now, but I'm trying my best to savour these last perfect days until I head back to reliable grey skies. It's true that no matter how cloudy the forecast there's nothing like going home, but right now I'm trying to concentrate on what's left of now.

The last time I went home for a long time was half way through The Erasmus Dream, and though I tried the only word I could find to describe it was 'indescribable' (yes, a royal cop out it may be, but I still don't think I could do a better job at summing up that first half). Now I'm approaching the end once again, and this time it's for good. I've been wondering if I could do a better job at summing up the whole thing. For all the people I met, friends that I'll keep for as long as I can wherever in the world they might be, everything we did, whatever I learnt from them and about myself, the places I got to see, and the times that weren't so good, I can say that this year has basically been an inspiration. To be honest you'd be hard pressed to not let 'inspirational' crop up when describing Granada. It's no wonder that in this little city (with it's snow topped mountain views, flowering hills and a heavenly palace) you'll find artists sketching on every other corner and flamenco being sung through your window at odd hours.

Though it didn't always feel it, looking back on the year it seems a bit dream like now. Of course you've got to wake up some time and in a few months I'll be back to Selly Oak (that's keeping it real I tell ya!) to finish off my degree and life will go on like it did before, but we won't be the same. This little interval in my studies has served as little kick start. You can go wherever you like, do whatever want and be whoever you want to. Have an interesting life, because you only get one. It might be a naive notion and maybe a little worn out, but it's one worth having tucked away somewhere all the same. Definitely something to remember when you find yourself in luck. You wouldn't want to waste that.

Yes, a little post dedicated to tea. After almost a year away from England it was inevitable.

Before I left, I dutifully packed my box of PG Tips in my suitcase preparing myself for a land barren of decent tea. However I quickly learnt that this was really not the case! Granada sprinkled with charming Arab teahouses. Tourist hot-spots, but enjoyable nonetheless.

The main thing that I will take back to the homelands is that putting cinnamon in your tea is good call. I'm a convert, and urge you all to do the same!

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little bit excited to see that Spice World The Movie was on the other day. I only caught the last bit, but it certainly took me a back a bit. My older cousin took me to see it as a special treat after she'd forgotten to pick me up from school one day. The cinema was empty so we danced up and down the aisle and even went up and TOUCHED THE SCREEN, which was a really, really ground breaking thing that I'd have to report to everyone on my return. Afterwards we went to Burger King and all was forgotten after a good afternoon.

I don't have anything extra to add to female role models girl bands women in the media blah blah blah, but watching Spice World today I realised how much sexier everyone has gotten in such a short space of time. It was a far cry from a Pussycat Dolls video. And I know the two are for different audiences, but little girls have watched both. Of course things have changed since our parents were young, but weren't the Spice Girls on the scene just the other day? We were shocked to see Geri's knickers at the Brit Awards, now we don't bat an eyelash when someone sings to us in their pants. In fact I know a fair amount of girls who will don similar popstar get up(knickers) for an evening at Oceana. Makes me wonder what kind of sexy future we'll have on our hands when we are the parents.

Anyway, sure the Spice Girls were pretty 'saucy' but they were more for the girls. The Pussycat Dolls might get you to sing 'don't you wish girlfriend was hot like me?' along with them like we're all the on the same team, but it's all for the boys whichever way you look at it. And if it was empowering you, it'd only be empowering you to be some kind of dickhead girl who teases other girls' boyfriends. That's not very Girl Power.

Enchanted Palace

We went to see the new exhibition at Kensington Palace today. It features some beautiful creations from the likes of Vivienne Westwood, William Tempest and Echo Morgan. However after lots of talk of 'dazzling spectacle', 'glittering finales' and the like, I was expecting something a bit more magical overall. Having a flick through the guest book at the end, it seemed others were a little less than enchanted too- I spotted quite a few 'disappointed' comments... Maybe save yourself a few bob and just have a look at the photos online instead. Lovely concept though.

During my brief dip into LFW I was lucky enough to catch Jacob Kimmie's Pilgrim collection at Vauxhall Fashion Scout. Each look from the talented Digbeth based designer, was a pleasure to see down the runway. The final look even included a baby (a very cute, well dressed baby) which maybe went slightly over my head, but certainly prompted many oohs and aahs. All in all a beautiful collection set against the impressive backdrop of Freemasons' Hall...

We watched Pierre Savaldori's Hors de Prix (Priceless) last night in the hope of improving our French. I could have sat getting stills throughout the whole film because it all looks so good, but since there's no time for that here are some stills from the party scene which is my faavourite. Plus it features Matthew Herbert's remix of Brother, Where Are You? by Oscar Brown Jr (as well as a bit of Jamie Lidell's What's the Use?) which is so perfect!

I still have photos from the Vauxhall Fashion Scout Exhibition and Jacob Kimmie to post, howevs I've been a bit of a sham with uploading and putting them together- haven't had much time to do it. Actually I was also a bit of a sham with attending, as I ended up missing a fair few shows for various reasons (mainly going back and forth between birmy and london, and uni work which I actually have to do sometimes sadly).

(You might remember Lako's 'Mushroom' collection from my little trip to the Felicities showroom last year...) I'm sad to say that pretty much ALL of my photos from the show did not come out clearly :( however I suggest you head over to Catwalk Genius as there are some great outfit shots from Susan Deer and more LFW coverage. London Fashion Week is just around the corner, and I'm pleased to say I'll be catching some shows as I'm blogging for the lovely Catwalk Genius!

If you've not heard of Catwalk Genius yet (where have you been?!) it's the online store where you can buy and invest in fashion aswell as shop for goodies. Basically you can buy a 'share' in your favourite designers new range, and then once the range is on sale you can make yourself a nifty lil profit! There's a tonne of designers lined up too so it really is worth a look.

Went to the The Gap Concept Store today to have a look at Garance Doré's exhibition. Maybe I didn't look properley, but I couldn't see any of Garance's t-shrits for sale boo!

It's finally been released after neeearly a DECADE (well 8 years) since it was recorded with J Dilla. The label decided it wasn't comercial enough the first time round. Better late than never!
